From “Magnolia” by Emma Louise Pratt 2022. The Māori name, tauhou, means ‘stranger’ or more literally ‘new arrival’. I used these birds in a scene of the story to signify the arrival of someone new to the school – Birdie, and the chatter and interest she stirred up among the children.
